Introduction to the Department: The ICU Open Heart Surgery (ICU-OH) department is located on the ground floor, adjacent to the operating room and angiography room. It has a capacity of 5 beds and is fully equipped with specialized medical equipment.

Patient Admission:

  • Postoperative heart surgery patients are transferred directly from the operating room to ICU-OH with the anesthesia team, where immediate postoperative care begins.
  • Patients from other hospital wards requiring intensive cardiac care, provided they are non-infectious, may be admitted after coordination with the ICU physician and shift supervisor.

The ICU-OH primarily cares for adult patients undergoing major heart surgeries, including:

  • Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)
  • Heart valve surgeries
  • Repair of congenital heart defects in children

Additionally, patients from other surgeries or wards who develop cardiovascular or respiratory complications requiring ICU-level care may be admitted to this unit if they are non-infectious.

Facilities and Equipment

Each ICU-OH bed is equipped with:

  •  Comprehensive monitoring system
  •  Central oxygen and central suction
  •  Defibrillator and pacemaker generator
  •  ABG (arterial blood gas) analysis device
  •  Portable X-ray machine
  •  Balloon pump device
  •  Syringe infusion pumps and perfusion pumps
  •  Cold vaporizer
  •  Emergency closed oxygen system
  •  Waveform mattress and wheelchair

Additional spaces within the unit include:

  • Nursing station
  • Clean workroom & dirty workroom
  • Doctor’s room
  • Staff locker room

Dedicated restrooms for staff and patients.

Patient Education:

  1. Educational support begins once the patient regains full consciousness.
  2. Patients receive necessary instructions during their ICU stay.
  3. Upon transfer to PCCU, a detailed educational booklet is provided for further guidance.

Postoperative Patient Care:

  1. Patients gradually regain consciousness about 6-8 hours after surgery.
  2. One day post-surgery, they can sit up and walk with assistance to the restroom.
  3. Approximately 4-5 days after surgery, patients are transferred to the PCCU for continued recovery.
  4. ICU-OH stay lasts around 5 days, with patient visits allowed only through the unit’s glass window to minimize infection risk.
  5. The total hospital stay for heart surgery patients is about one week.
  6. Diet after surgery starts with fluids (such as juice and soup), which companions can bring for the patient.
